  • Senecio barbertonicus Care

Light Requirements: Senecio barbertonicus succulents like lots of light. They do best in a bright, sunny window with 4 to 6 hours of sun and bright indirect light the rest of the day. If your Senecio bush is growing leggy and leaning to one side, it is seeking and stretching for more light. To stop the leggy growth, move the plant closer to a window or supplement the light with a plant lamp.

Watering: Senecio barbertonicus is extremely drought-tolerant and prone to root rot. To prevent overwatering, let the soil dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain out of the bottom of the pot. Over-watering symptoms include soft, soggy leaves that turn yellow or even black before dropping off. Water very sparingly in winter. Water it just enough to make sure the leaves don’t shrivel up completely. If you are not sure, you can use a moisture meter to help you with when to water.

Fertilizing: Senecio Barbertonicus plants don’t need a lot of fertilizer. But you can give your plant a boost during the active growing season in spring and summer. Fertilize about once a month with diluted succulent fertilizer. Don’t fertilize in winter.

Humidity: The succulent bush Senecio is not very needy when it comes to humidity levels. It can grow in average household humidity. No need for misting.

Soil and Repotting: Repot as needed when the lemon bean bush outgrows the pot, best to do so in spring or early summer. If your Senecio has outgrown its pot, repot it in a pot one size bigger than the original. Clay terra cotta pots are a good choice since they are porous and let the soil dry out faster than plastic containers that hold moisture inside longer. Plant your Secenecio barbertonicus in well-draining succulent soil, in a pot that has drainage holes on the bottom. Excess water needs a way out.
